Wilted Organic Baby Spinach with Garlic Chickpeas
Ingredients
4 Tbsp organic olive oil
2 cloves finely minced garlic
1 can organic cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
16 oz organic baby spinach
1/2 fresh squeezed lemon
Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Directions:
1. Heat olive oil and garlic in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
2. Add beans to skillet and toss with oil and garlic about 3 mins. 20140426-152228.jpg
3. Add baby spinach which will overflow pan. Squeeze lemon over spinach. 20140426-152243.jpg
4. Cover with lid to wilt the spinach. Remove lid occasionally to stir so spinach cooks evenly and beans don’t burn. 20140426-152728.jpg
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste and more lemon if desired.

PCOS- A Break through for Symptom Management

 The identification and proper diagnosis of PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome, has made tremendous advances over the years. It’s remarkable how wonderful you can feel with some life changes in diet and supplements.  The addition of the Glucorein PCOS, a medical food, has made a wonderful addition to my regimen. It took me a few months before I noticed any overall effects which are subtle. It was only when I ran out did I appreciate the benefits I experienced while taking it. It really helped to sharpen my mental acuity so I didn’t feel so “foggy”.  My menstrual cycles have been regular for almost a year with out medication. Being a nurse/health coach, I am very interested in the facts and studies related to the efficacy of whatever I may be taking.  I thought I would share a bit of the research being conducted by NVN. The main ingredient is chlorogenic acid with L-cysteine.

Chlorogenic acid has specifically been shown to inhibit enzyme, glucose-6-phosphatase, that promotes the formation of glucose (sugar) in the liver. So scientists believe it is the chlorogenic acid in coffee that may be responsible, at least in part, for the reduced risk of glycemic disorders like insulin resistance and diabetes. Other studies suggest that chlorogenic acid also slows the absorption of fat from food intake and it may also activate metabolism of extra fat.  Green coffee beans remain one of the best natural sources for chlorogenic acid. Chloregenic acid has been shown in studies to control blood glucose, decrease insulin resistance, improve glucose tolerance and decrease plasma and liver lipids and lowers cholesterol all with little or no side effects. The other main ingredient is L-Cysteine which is a naturally occurring amino acid. L-cysteine has shown to help reduce BMI, hirsutism, fasting insulin, free testosterone, menstrual irregularity and cholesterol levels.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the clinical, endocrine and metabolic effects of metformin and N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Study Design: In this prospective trial, 100 women with PCOS were randomly divided to receive metformin (500 mg p.o. three times daily) or NAC (600 mg p.o. three times daily) for 24 weeks. Hyperandrogenism, lipid profiles, hirsutism scores, menstrual irregularity, insulin sensitivity and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were measured at baseline and after the treatment period.

Results: Both treatments resulted in a significant decrease in body mass index, hirsutism score, fasting insulin, HOMA index, free testosterone and menstrual irregularity compared with baseline values, and both treatments had equal efficacy. NAC led to a significant decrease in both total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels, whereas metformin only led to a decrease in total cholesterol level. Although TNF-α levels increased following treatment for both groups, the difference from baseline was not significant.

Conclusions: Metformin and NAC appear to have comparable effects on hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinaemia and menstrual irregularity in women with PCOS. The effects of metformin and NAC on insulin sensitivity are not associated with TNF-α.

Lovely Lemons
